ELAINE SOUDA grew up in Boston, MA and Miami, FL. She graduated with a B.F.A. from Florida State University and moved to New York City to study at the Art Student’s League with Robert Beverly Hale, Marshall Glasier and Richard Pousette-Dart. Pousette-Dart became a mentor and championed support for her in her early years in NYC. In 1984 she received a Scholarship from the Arts Student League and in 1986, a Fellowship from the Provincetown Art Association and Museum School.

In the late 70’ and 80’s, Souda showed in many East Village galleries including the Fun Gallery and Now Gallery. She was one of several familiar and recognized graffiti artists, known as es53. She moved to Boston in 1995 and resides in both Boston and Wellfleet. Her paintings have been shown in galleries in the United States and abroad. She has spent the last several years primarily working by commission for private collectors.

Souda believes colors and shapes have a more exact meaning than words---that a painting is a mysterious and powerful language that draws you in, wakes and moves you, transforms and changes the way you see-- expressing something for you of which you may have been unaware or unable to express…

Souda is presently working on a commission: a series of paintings that explore the connections between science and art. She describes the work as “expressionist Mandala paintings.” The fluid compositions of the paintings are a series of abstract patterns that unite the visual language of synthetic chemical structures with archaic elements and primitive symbols.
