John Ruggieri

John Ruggieri photographs in ways similar to his approach to painting: abstracting from real life, using a liquid white light as optical presence/absence, and cropping architecturally from found color and atmosphere.

His work is about memory, layering, complex space, shape, movement, and minimalist color and form. The monumentality and psychological calm of these large-format photographs has established John Ruggieri as one of the new evangelists of emotional art within our generation. The ambiguous relations of shapes, color and light has opened the eyes of artists and inspired many collectors to understanding the importance of simplicity in the abstract.

John's award-winning work is included in collections internationally and has been shown in galleries and museums throughout the United States since 1991. His work has been included in museum and gallery exhibitions by curators such as Neal Benezra, Zach Feur, Camilo Alvarez, Annette Lemieux, Mike Carroll, James Hull, and Carl Belz. John's new photography has been selected by curator Laurel Ptak to be included as October 21's Pic of the Day on the influential art blog iheartphotograph.com, which receives up to 17,000 page views a month. Awards also include those from the New England Foundation for the Arts and the Copley Society of Art in Boston. John writes about art for various publications including the online art journal Big RED & Shiny. John holds a B.A. in painting and philosophy from Hampshire College and is also an alumnus of the Rhode Island School of Design.
