Abstraction, having a non-literal basis for communication, speaks to us on a deeper level. Boundaries are broken down leaving the gateway open to individual interpretation.

The grid, which began my exploration with the circle patterns, has evolved into a woven surface. Small curves are cut away revealing another layer, where new patterns and ideas develop.

I create intuitively with a combination of oil, casein, encaustic or collage. Saturating the rice paper first with areas of rich encaustic color, I then cut it into strips and weave them together. I am intrigued by the way the image begins to stabilize with the addition of weaving. The fabric-like quality establishes the sense of an interconnected system, and I continue to work the image with oil and wax.

Realizations come to me in this process, such as the many elements that make up a whole. One’s life, for instance, is filled with many routines and patterns that offer stability and in time ,change ,as the individual becomes bored or grows beyond her circumstances seeking something new.

I see the patterns I create as a metaphor for the cycles and patterns in a person’s life, and continue to be absorbed in the process.
