zack miller

Zack Miller’s recent paintings of contemplative arrangements of blocks that occupy psychic landscapes range from 8 x 10” to no larger than 16 x 20”. Their intimate scale and tactile paint application invite a slow, luxurious viewing. The oil paint’s crisp, deliberate color moves between permanence and luminosity where the white gesso ground reflects light back through thin paint film. Miller employs play blocks to invoke spiritual scenarios that are fantastic expressions of utopian desire. The blocks seem to ask to be touched and rearranged, inviting viewer engagement, while their simple geometric forms and colors speak to the fundaments of visual mechanics in building art. Ultimately, the dialogue centers on issues of harmony and equilibrium.

Zachary Miller graduated from Brown University magna cum laude with a B.A. in Visual Art. His work has been featured in numerous shows, including the Weatherspoon Museum’s Art on Paper 2008 national survey. Zack has had the opportunity to pursue a residency at the Vermont Studio Center as well as study at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League of New York, and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He has a deep connection to the Outer Cape, spending time here yearly since birth.
