THOM LUSSIER

THOM LUSSIER is a graduate of Massachusetts College of Art (BFA, Photography) and a Master's recipient from Yale University (MFA, photography). Lussier's work has been exhibited in major cities across the globe including: New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Milan, and London. He resides in New York City and has been summering in Provincetown since 1995.

Lussier has worked with large format cameras for many years, enjoying the narrative possibilities within the use of selective focus. Selective Focus is possible by using a large format camera's independently moving lens & film planes . Working the "camera movements" provides infinite focusing possibilities. Lussier has devoted many years exploring such possibilities with a 4" x 5" Camera.

In 1999, Lussier began working with the 6cm x 17cm or "panorama" format. At first renting a Fuji 6cm x 17cm box camera, Lussier explored this elegant shape without selective focus. When he made the decision to invest in a Fuji of his own he discovered that the model had been discontinued -almost none were to be found second hand. Eventually Lussier discovered that Canham Cameras had developed a 6cm x 17cm motorized roll back for their 5" x 7" large format camera. In this one camera system Lussier's love for large format cameras was suddenly married with his new found passion for the panorama shape. For Thom, a love affair was born. In the resulting work we see Lussier's orchestration of focal planes contained within this graceful shape.

For 2010, Lussier offers a collection of images as part of an ongoing survey of Provincetown & the Provincelands Landscape. Several images from this Provincetown Portfolio will be on view this summer and are exclusively available through the Schoolhouse Gallery. The images are Lambda C Prints, created from drum scanned Color negatives generated through the use of A Canham 5" x 7" view camera with a 6cm x 17cm roll back. The image files are color balanced by the artist himself. The prints are made, using Lamda Technology, under the artist's supervision. The selective focus apparent in each image is intentional and serves to assist in creating the narrative lyricism within each scene. The finished pieces range in size from 36" w x 12"H to 72"w x 24"h and come in small editions of six.
