| Norma Holt surveys her subjects with the eye of a purist, her direct and intelligent gaze looking at life from childhood to old age. Her focus has often been on the artists around her and on reminders of women's projects in Third World countries as far away as Egypt, India, Napal, and Tunisia; places where women are helping to build developing societies. Much of her photographic work was done while on assignment for the United Nations.
For the last decade Holt has been photographing older women, however in recent years she has begun to concentrate on new ways of presenting photographs.
She now collaborates with many other artists on box constructions that include existing photographs hand picked from her archive. There's more art, more technique here than photography alone. The work is riveting, mysterious, political and courageous. |
