Henny Garfunkel

HENNY GARFUNKEL sees things funny. She also sees funny things. In a world flooded with images, Henny's work stands out as ironic and a little bit subversive. Her pictures capture the odd moment -- the odder, the better.

For twenty five years Henny has divided her time between photo journalism and editorial and advertising work for clients that include Premiere magazine, Entertainment Weekly, In Style, Vogue, Sundance Channel, Barney's New York and the NFL. She considers herself a street photographer primarily, an environmental portraitist. Her pictures have an informality and a humor that reflect her influences: Diane Arbus, Brassai, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Sammy Davis Jr., Josephine Baker, Liberace.

A self-taught photographer, Henny began shooting 30 years ago with a point-and-shoot camera. Since then she has developed a humble, casual, almost accidental style. She likes to react to the world, rather than pose it. She's most comfortable on the street and relies on serendipity to provide her with her best material: The fat man doing a belly flop in a pool; the father pushing his gun-toting child around a flea market in pram; the woman in an American flag hat made out of plastic flowers. These are the characters who pass through Henny's world.

Garfunkel says she never started out wanting to photography celebrities or movie stars. "That wasn't anything I aspired to," she says in this segment. "I think of myself primarily as a street photography who photographs people that I'm attracted to while I'm walking down the street. People, mostly, that are in outsider subcultures. But when you think about it, celebrities are in outsider subcultures, so it's perfect."

Garfunkel, has been photographing celebrities since the late 80's. In 1993, she began to cover film festivals - Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto -- for magazines. Her subjects are people who stand out in a world of conformists, which is one reason she's had so much success photographing celebrities. As one photo editor put it: "Her personality and style have been a welcoming touch and celebrities and film makers alike feel comfortable around her. They gravitate towards her. It's a rare occasion that anyone turns Henny down. They want to be in her photographs."
