MIKE CARROLL was born in New York and raised in Rhode Island. He attended Emerson College and the Museum School in Boston. Later he ran the live performance and Video section at The Boston Film Video Foundation, when video was in its black and white reel to reel infancy. When development displaced the performances held there Carroll opened his first gallery, The 11th Hour where he held early exhibitions by Mark Morrisroe and performances by Human Sexual Response, Jack Smith and The Clam Twins, among others. Carroll has made and presented art and phenomena for over 25 years. He is the owner and Director of the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, Ma.

Carroll works with oils and related media to make paintings on wood panels, organizing shapes and forms in a variety of manner to create a language of intersection, tenderness, and apartness as well tension, surface, edge and viscera. A love of formal structures is apparent, but his familiar feeling shapes and plain colors often work to make a murmuration of beauty, visual noise and a reordering daily life. Time is still in this work but the dynamic spaces clamor to be seen while also talking about the act of looking. Our sense of foreground and background is really set aside here for a confluence of memory and reality as we are asked to engage in an investigation of illusion which seems to be about teasing space. These are soft but not easy paintings.

Carroll maintains a studio in Provincetown, Ma. And in South Florida and exhibits regularly throughout the US.
