Ramón Alcoléa

Ramon S. Alcolea was born in Sevilla, Spain. He graduated from Parsons School of Design in New York City. Later he was the assistant to Ronald Bladen; considered one of the founders of Minimalism, until his death in 1988. A resident of Provincetown since 1989 Alcolea has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, New York State Council on the Arts Grant, Provincetown Local Council Grant among others.

Alcolea’s current work encompasses a time period from the Fall of 2006 to the present. They are the product of an extreme alertness to the medium (plywood) and its format, which is based on an evolution of dimensions in which all heights, lengths and depths are directly connected. There are no random dimensions. Randomness occurs when the final forms take a life of their own apart from their specific construction. They are the response at creating a body of work that uses minimalism as a jumping point and allowing the form to evolve naturally.
